Cloudy skies and reports of rain could not keep the families and community members of Sunnyside away from the annual Sunnyside Gardens’ Park Memorial Day Fair last Saturday.

Children got their faces painted, played fair games, jumped in bouncy castles and climbed rock walls while parents enjoyed live music and good company.

Silly Billy the Clown performed for the kids, capturing their undivided attention with his gags and tricks.

“It’s nice to be at a fair with so much green,” Sunnyside resident Eva Fearn said of the park. “It’s a suburban feel, but you’re still in our little community.”

Ty Sullivan, who has lived in Sunnyside for 22 years and helps plan many community events, including the fair, said that the rain had no effect on the number of people who showed up for the day.

Dressed as Uncle Sam, Sullivan said the Sunnyside community is a special one.

“It’s got a real heart to it,” he said. “It’s a real family community.”

While many of the kids recognize Sullivan from around the community, he said that most do not understand his costume.

“If I get one more request for what I want for Christmas...,” he said, laughing.
