Officers Demetrios Raptis and Kevin Arias of the 112th Precinct were both presented the Cop of the Month Award last week at the Community Council meeting in Forest Hills.

Raptis was recognized for his work in bringing down a suspect connected to dozens of car thefts in the last several months.

Captain Thomas Conforti delivered Raptis and Arias their plaques, and said for Raptis, it wouldn’t have been possible without his patience and persistence in bringing down the suspect.

“They sat there for hours and hours paid off,” Conforti said, describing the night of the arrest. “Lo and behold, an individual came along with a flashlight, and broke into a vehicle right in front of him (Raptis).”

Conforti said officers chased the perpetrator for three blocks before later nabbing him and bringing the perpetrator to justice.

“These officers really contributed to the reduction of crime in these areas,” he said.

Arias was presented his award for leading the squad in bringing down a suspect connected to a string of arson fires last month. Conforti said without the hard work from Officer Arias, the suspect responsible for the four-day, 13-fire spree would still be on the loose.

“This arsonist went on a rampage and started his terror in the 110th Precinct by setting fires at Best Buy and Macy's in Queens Center Mall,” Conforti described. “As that fire was going on, the firemen were coming in and battling it, the smoke was coming through and people were evacuating, these officers really had the frame of mind to lock down the mall.”
