While education is the key to succeeding in today’s society, technology has become a huge part of it as well. With more and more schools using iPads, MacBooks and smart boards, ones that don’t are falling behind.

On Feb. 6, the Academy of American Studies High School in Long Island City held celebrated a new computer room and smart boards in every classroom thanks to to $300,000 in funding allocated by Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.

“I believe in the students and I believe in what’s happening here,” Van Bramer said.

Brendan Smith has been the digital media teacher at the school since 2001. He said the school has needed computers for a long time, and now students that have a passion for photography, movies, editing or graphic design can really flourish.

“We’re really happy to finally give the kids the computers that they deserve,” Smith said.
