On Saturday, December 21, Santa in his beautiful sleigh circa 1877, owned and driven by Joe Tripi with his 96-year-old mom ringing bells and saying “Shop Woodhaven,” rode along Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue.

This being the third year that she has rode with us in cold weather and this year in warm weather. It is so great to have Ana Tripi with us. She is such fun.

Together we rode along Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue and then Santa took free pictures with the young and young at heart. On December 21, the WBID-sponsored picture taking took place in Forest Park Plaza. The weather was warm and sunny, like a spring day.

So our Santa, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman enjoyed taking Santa pictures. This one day we took 140 pictures and gave out goodies and made everyone happy. This free Santa promotion is only on our Jamaica Avenue, only in Woodhaven!

Then Santa and all his helpers sang out together “We wish you a Merry Christmas!” So we hope that you spent your last days of shopping on our WBID’s Jamaica Avenue at our stores and our businesses that care. This year we experienced a mix of mild weather and some snowy rainy and windy days for your shopping for Christmas and Hanukkah presents.

As you know, unfortunately our beautiful planted tree, which was chosen by the Daily News as the fourth Best Tree in all of New York City in 2011, was taken down by the terrible storm of Sandy. Our new tree brightly lit our Forest Parkway Plaza with all the surrounding trees and our little Woodhaven Street Tree.

Also the return of the WBID Trolley was a great success and all have told me they were so happy to see it back on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue. The free quarter distribution was also successful, for 70 cars had their first 15 minutes of parking paid for courtesy of the WBID.

Do not forget to re-apply for the STAR Program by December 31. Call (518) 457-2036 or go to for more information.

Next week I will review our Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and Woodhaven Business Improvement District accomplishments of 2013 and our Wish List for 2014.

To all of you our neighbors, storeowners, business owners and residents, we hope that you had a very Happy Hanukkah and that you have a very Merry Christmas. Please, next Tuesday on New Year’s Eve be safe. We wish a very happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year to you and yours.

May God bless our armed forces, may God bless our veterans, may God bless our leaders and may God bless our America.
