The Red Storm is 5-4 on the season while the Dukes improved to 8-2.
“That was another tough game for us today as we tried to bounce back from yesterday,” said Red Storm head coach Joe Tartamella. “I thought we put ourselves in a hole that was tough to get out of, and I thought our second half showed signs of energy and how we are capable of playing as a group.”
St. John’s outscored James Madison 38-35 in the second half in cutting a 16-point halftime deficit to two points with 7:33 remaining in the contest, but couldn’t complete the comeback and avoid its second defeat in as many days.
Playing in her second game of the season, senior guard Eugeneia McPherson was named to the Chartwells Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team after scoring a team-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting overall and 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc against James Madison.
McPherson scored nine points in Saturday’s 62-55 loss to Drexel, her first action of the season.
Sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford finished with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals on Sunday to join McPherson in double figures, while junior Amber Thompson chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, two steals and a season-high three blocks.
St. John’s is back in action on Dec. 22 when it makes its season debut at Madison Square Garden against Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m. in the Maggie Dixon Classic.
