The past Saturday the weather was warm bright and sunny. It was not hot for our Annual “Back to School Sales Days,” which was held on our award-winning Woodhaven Business Improvement District's Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street.

Our “Everything Avenue” was hopping and moving with activity. The shoppers finding “everything” they need right here on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue, where we’re Taking Care of BIDness. Many great savings were had.

The children were smiling with little faces brightly painted with cat eyes and pink rabbit noses. They walked along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue with balloons and waving small American flags with their WBID shopping bags full of free goodies.

Also all along the avenue our WBID reps were distributing free quarters to people parking cars, thanking them for shopping our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue. In our Forest Parkway Plaza, there was rocking and dancing to the great music of the band Plastic Soul. The old and young alike tapped their feet to this talented group. It was a truly fun shopping day with something for everyone.

These free events all courtesy of your store and business owners that care enough to contribute to the WBID that make these enjoyable free activities possible. So continue to shop, shop, shop our Everything Avenue. Only in Woodhaven.

This promotion exemplifies what WBID does for Woodhaven. It and others on our avenue, along with the WBID street cleaners, cleaning seven days a week, graffiti vandalism, beautification and the American flags flying along our avenue are all sponsored by Woodhaven’s BID.

The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation administers the WBID through our office. The telephone number for the WBID is (718) 805-0760, or you can also call our GWDC office at (718) 805-0202, with any Jamaica Avenue problems. Please do not hesitate to leave a message or email us at

The GWDC is again offering low-cost, home-improvement loans. These loans at 2.5 and 5 percent are available for one to four-family homes. Please call our office to find out if you qualify.

In last week’s column, I stated the sad news that our Woodhaven’s own Dr. Thomas Reily was closing his Forest Parkway office, I have been advised that this closing will take place on September 30.

Speaking of Forest Parkway, our staff has been watering our little street tree so that it will be strong for transplanting when we get our real Christmas Tree. Don’t forget to water your street tree using water from your air conditioner.

Tuesday September 10, will be the Democratic and Republican primaries. Please be sure to cast your vote on this day. It is very important that you vote on this day for sometimes the primary determines the election. The general election will be held on Tuesday November 5. Remember if you can not get to the polls to vote, call (866) 868-3692 for an absentee ballot. Make sure you mail it by Thursday, September 5. This ballot has to be mailed back by Wednesday September 11 (this very sad tragic day). Every vote counts, and voting makes Woodhaven strong.

Our Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival 2013 is on Sunday October 20, from noon to 6 p.m. Make a big mark on your calendar for this big day.

Fly your American Flags Proudly above all others from your homes or apartments and replace them often. Wear your lapel flag pin, too. May God bless our armed forces, our disabled veterans and may God bless America.
