In memory of fallen soldiers, the U.S. Columbarium and Fresh Pond Crematory and the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1224 held a memorial service on this past weekend

The cremated remains of 34 veterans and nine spouses of veterans from the Civil War, World War I and World War II were honored at the chapel at Fresh Pond Crematory, 61-40 Mount Olivet Crescent in Middle Village.

From there, the remains were taken by the American Legion Riders via motorcade and accompanied by the Patriot Guard riders to Long Island National Cemetery.

“U.S. Columbarium and Fresh Pond Crematory’s mission is to provide memorial niches for all cremated remains with dignity,” said J.P. DiTroia president of the columbarium. “With that in mind, it is our honor to be a part of this memorial event.

“When I see these markers in this cemetery of all those who have served, I realize that if it where not for their sacrifice we would not have the freedom that we all enjoy today,” he added.
