There are two groups of candidates using different methods to become the next mayor.
Democrats Sal Albanese, William Thompson and Erick Salgado, Republicans John Catsimatidis, Joseph Lhota and George McDonald, and Independent Adolfo Carrion, Jr. campaign full time on their own respective dime and time without picking the pockets of taxpayers.
Contrast them with Democrats Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Comptroller John Liu and Speaker Christine Quinn. All three have been engaged in a nonstop series of press conferences, news releases, issuance of various reports, letters to the editor, guest columns in newspapers and publicity stunts for years.
All of this was at taxpayers' expense to raise their respective name identification with voters and grease the wheels for the 2013 Democratic Party mayoral primary.
Hard-working municipal civil servants work full time. They can't campaign part time during the day like de Blasio, Liu and Quinn. They would have to either take a leave of absence or quit their day job.
De Blasio, Liu and Quinn should avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest by resigning the current offices they occupy today. All three should be honest enough to run full time for mayor on their own time and dime.
