Parents at PS 232 in the Lindenwood section of Howard Beach are calling on the city to, at the very least, install a crosswalk at the intersection of 153rd Avenue and 83rd Street.
“We have argued for a traffic light, we’ve argued for speed bumps,” said State Senator Joe Addabbo at a rally last Friday morning, “but I guess the most immediate need and the one that I believe would be easy to do is a crosswalk right at this intersection.”
He said that many parents park in the parking lot across the street when picking their children up or dropping them off. But this means that they have to cross in the middle of 153rd Avenue at 83rd Street at the three-way intersection.
Addabbo said a crossing guard at the spot is doing a great job, but needs help.
“She can no longer cross people at this point, because it is illegal to cross people where there is no crosswalk,” he said.
Department of Transportation data shows that no one has been injured at the location between 2007 and 2011. However, Stefanie Claise said a bus was letting students off at the intersection and had its stop sign out, but a driver simply ignored it.
“The car almost knocked me and my son straight over,” she said. “Some of these kids are five and six years old and cannot cross the street by themselves.”
“It’s definitely a serious safety issue,” added PTA member Nancy Brady.
