O’Neill’s bar and restaurant, located at 64-21 53rd Dr. in Maspeth, is delaying their highly anticipated Flag Day grand opening for a couple of weeks, as owners seek to complete additional renovations and obtain the necessary permits.

George O’Neill has stood idle during the rebuilding process after a two-day long fire took his family-run business back in May 2011.

“We apologize for not opening on the 14th because of permit problems,” O’Neill said. “We should be open in a couple of weeks.”

The newly refurbished restaurant will offer large party and catering rooms for up to 225 people, the dining room will seat 100 and the remodeled bar section will seat an additional 100 guests.

O’Neill also plans to add rooftop tables and seating as soon as he gets approval from the city.

The Maspeth restaurant opened its doors in 1960, but has been in the O'Neill family since 1928.

“There was a grocery store, a refrigeration store over there,” O’Neill told this paper a couple of weeks ago in an interview, pointing around the block. “There was a newspaper store over there, a bakery store over here and I just kept knocking the wall down to build O’Neill’s, the restaurant.”
