“The community is a very patriotic community,” Maltese said. “It’s not only important to this area but to the entire city of New York.”
Katz and Maltese joined a number of local civic leaders and members of the community at the Blackwater Inn at 101-17 Metropolitan Ave. to celebrate.
Katz, born and raised in Forest Hills, said she remembers standing along Metropolitan Avenue for the Memorial Day parade as long ago as she can remember.
“There’s a certain amount of pride that comes from this community knowing that there has been a consistent parade every single year,” Katz said. “I’m proud that the community chooses to use this holiday to honor our veterans who lost their lives and to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks as well; like 9/11.”
This year’s parade is Sunday, May 26 at 12 p.m. beginning at Metropolitan and Ascan Avenues and heads West to Remsen Memorial Park at Trotting Course Lane.
The parade is only made possible through contributions from businesses in Forest Hills including: Blackwaters Pub, TD Bank, Metropolitan Avenue BID, Forest Hills Times, 7-Eleven, 5 Burros Cafe, Standish Title, Forest Hills Civic, J&B Painting and Royal Collectibles.
